About me

My name is Joachim Hendrik Schipper. I was born in Utrecht, the Netherlands, in 1985. I am a student of mathematics at the university of Utrecht who occasionally pretends to “know computers”. As you can see, I like to hear myself talk. Or type.

This site was originally intended to be a platform for writing about my experiences and observations in the United States. It ended up a bit more general, though.

Mathematics

Understanding advanced mathematics is difficult. It’s very rewarding, though, and there is a lot of beauty there.

Since mathematics is my “day job”, you will most likely not find too much about this subject here.

Computers

Getting computers to behave isn’t quite as difficult as discovering interesting new mathematical facts. In fact, when I’m not with my girlfriend, a lot of my free time is spent around them.

When given a choice, I will use an OpenBSD system for almost anything. If that is not an option, Linux or pretty much any other UNIX system will do.

In the months before I left for the US, I worked as a system administrator for GridLine. I worked on their Debian Linux systems, and as necessary on the Windows systems.

I program a wide variety of things in a wide varieties of languages. Unfortunately, most of my personal projects are more an attempt to learn than an attempt to produce something useful. As my abilities and confidence therein grow, I hope to publish more code online. At least, the website you are looking at is a start…

Other interests

My other interests include world politics, philosophy and the major and not-so-major world religions. I might write about these as inspiration strikes me.
